A 30-year-old runner died near the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

Officials stated there were more than a dozen casualties at the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday morning, including one runner who collapsed and died near the finish line.

On Saturday, the New York City Fire Department confirmed to PEOPLE that 16 people were taken to local hospitals

five of whom were in critical condition and one of whom was pronounced deceased.

According to race organisers, the runner, a 30-year-old male who was pronounced deceased at Coney Island Hospital, died of unknown causes.

The Brooklyn Half Marathon, organised by New York Road Runners, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money for charity through its races

 is more than 13 miles long and runs from Prospect Park to Coney Island.
