The Alaska Army Base was attacked by bears.
Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant, 30, of the United States Army, was murdered in a bear assault in Anchorage, Alaska, on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the base, Plant was part of a small crew from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) exercising in Training Area 412 west of the Anchorage Regional Landfill.
According to evidence acquired at the scene, the attack was carried out by a brown bear. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), "given all we know thus far
based on the site investigation and information from other responding agencies, this seems to be a defensive attack by a female grizzly protecting her cubs."
Emergency personnel reacting to the incident came across a brown bear in the area and used bear spray to scare it away
and a den with two brown bear pups was discovered nearby. The fur found at the scene also pointed to a brown bear attack.
