Hundreds of people have been killed by landslides and floods in northeast Brazil.

Authorities claimed landslides triggered by torrential rains killed roughly 30 people in the Recife metropolitan area, the capital of northeastern Pernambuco state.

"There have been 28 deaths in the previous 24 hours," the Civil Defence stated in a statement on Saturday.

According to civil defence officials on Twitter, flooding in Pernambuco has forced more than 760 individuals to flee their homes.

In a video uploaded on Instagram, Lieutenant Colonel Leonardo Rodrigues, the executive secretary of Pernambuco's civil defence department

claimed that roughly 32,000 homes in the state are at risk of landslides or flooding.

The city of Recife has offered schools to welcome the homeless.
