Causes of "Puffing Out Too Much" in Your Stomach
Are you fed up with stomach bloating? You're not alone; according to the Cleveland Clinic, between 10% and 25% of otherwise healthy adults have periodic stomach bloating.
Constipation is not only inconvenient, but it can also cause stomach bloating. "Everything has come to a halt," Beth Czerwony, RD, adds.
Experts suggest that an imbalance of beneficial bacteria in the gut is a typical cause of belly bloating. "This is what I call a 'food baby.'"
"Chronic gas and bloating can be caused by certain gastrointestinal dysfunctions including SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)," says Will Cole, MD.
Processed foods, restaurant foods, and convenience foods are especially high in sodium, which can cause belly bloating.
"Bloating is more common in women than in men," adds Dr. Cole. "Hormonal changes that occur throughout a woman's cycle may be to blame."
