Lionel Messi is the highest-paid athlete according to Forbes in 2022.
According to Forbes' 2022 list, soccer players accounted for three of the world's four highest-paid athletes in the previous year.
Lionel Messi led the list with a reported income of $130 million, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo on $115 million and Neymar on $95 million.
Between May 2021 and May 2022, Forbes classified over 58 percent of Messi's earnings as "on-field," meaning it came from "prize money, salary, and bonuses."
The remaining $55 million in Messi's estimated earnings came from licencing and sponsorship partnerships with companies like Socios, Adidas, Budweiser, and Pepsi.
In August, Messi switched from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.
In the same season, Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United from Juventus.
